  • option 1 - Mulhacén

    option 1 - Mulhacén

Geographical data: Although its height is not exceptional, the Mulhacén (3.479) is the highest peak of the Iberian Peninsula and of Europe outside the Caucasus and the Alps, since the Canary Islands with its highest peak El Teide (3.718) and Greenland with Gunnbjørn Fjeld (3.694), with higher peaks, belong politically to Europe, but geographically they are part of Africa and North America, respectively.

In principle all year round possible to clime it without gear, but in winter, from november till April / May, with special mountain guides and gear.

Possible to do it in a day but very challenging, usually two days needed (with a night in the refuge Poqueira). Same for Alcazaba. Also possible to take the minibus (13 euro extra p.p.) from Capileira that will bring you higher and closer to the summits and makes it easier to get to them. It’s also possible to combine it with one or two of the other summits and stay for a night or two in the refuge Poqueira or more adventurous in a tent.

    Difficulty: Moderate

  • option 5 - Acequia baja y alta

    option 5 - Acequia baja y alta

The moors have left an impressive water channel system that is still working perfect and is used as the most important veins to transport the water. This is used for irrigation purposes and water supplies for the little villages in the Alpujarras.

We start at “La Cabaña de Simon” at Prado Grande just above Capileira where we follow acequia Baja and brings us to the highest farmhouse around “Cortijo de las Tomas” where we hike back along the acequia Alta. We will have all the time impressive views from the Sierra Nevada and will find many endemic flora and great birdwatching.

    option 6 - Rio Toril

A challenging walk along the river Toril that joins the river Poqueira at La Cebadilla, close to Capileira, along gorges and old farmhouses. Great , dramatic views and precious nature. Following the river up and crossing it and walking back along the other side of the river. This is a not well known and forgotten route. That means we will not see many people along this walk.
